[session]

The first question people ask is "How much is this going to cost me?"

Which I sometimes counter with "What value can you put on a photo that gets you a step closer to the modelling job, headshot that goes in the playbill, the image on your first CD? Or the beautiful memento of your pregnancy?".

Many people get in touch with photographers for different reasons. Headshots, model portfolio shoots, individual portraits, corporate web portraits, event photography and weddings. Price ranges for photography vary and can depend on such factors as where you and the photographer live, duration of the shoot, prep time and planning, number of subjects, complexity of the shoot, printing and post production time, and travel/expenses.

If you hire a photographer who is selling their services for a bargain basement price, they are either highly undervaluing themselves as a photographer, or they are not much of a professional. Having said that, they may do a proper job. If they show up with a point and shoot camera like your boyfriend or cousin or sister has, and you are satisfied with that, then perhaps you would be better off getting one of them to shoot your photos as opposed to parting with your hard earned money.

The time you spend with the photographer during a session is really only one aspect of the entire process of working with a photographer. You are hiring their experience and their eye as much as their equipment. That time and experience is valuable. The 130,000 photos taken in the last four to five years and the well over 150 photo shoots with models and other clients all comes into play with your session. Even if you only want one headshot for your 'book', that experience will translate into a much better result down the road for you.

Professional grade equipment goes into the cost of a session too. Memory cards, editing software, lighting, high quality lenses, tripods and so on are generally quite expensive. You want to benefit from the results that can come from this equipment in the hands of someone who knows how to use it. Post production (the dark room process) is an equally important factor. Selecting 1 shot or 20 or 30 finished images, doing digital touch ups on them, resizing, burning to CD or emailing proofs, printing images/mailing them can result in time spent that is often many times longer than the actual photoshoot itself.

All this is worth the price of admission of working with a professional photographer. You will not get that same attention to detail from your girlfriend's point and shoot, or your best friend's camera phone!".

No two photoshoots are alike, but I generally divide my work into three types or packages: Portraits, Fashion/Modelling, and Fine Art Nudes.

General package information

For all packages, printing can either be done by yourself at your leisure from the provided CD of images, or by me at a slight additional cost - with your choice of high grade archival prints or standard prints which may be more economical for you. I find giving the printing option to clients is the best as often soft copies will be sufficient for their needs - and printing can be done down the road. If selecting an image to be printed, 5x7, 8x10 or larger can be done, and these can be tastefully matted or framed for you (costs may vary depending on requests). If additional reprints, replacement copies, or Cd's are needed in the future, this not built into any initial quote.

Number of finished/edited images can be discussed prior to a session and can vary greatly by individual needs, however. Raw / unedited images are not shared with clients except as low resolution proofs.

Turn around time from finishing the session to delivering the edited images to you is usually a week to ten days, but this can be impacted by prior booked work, whether you want prints done and how many edited images you are looking for. If you have a 'rush job' or have a specific deadline in mind ( a birthday present, graduation, publication date, Mother's Day, Christmas or seasonal - or your due date if pregnant!) make sure you let me know when we meet initially.

Lastly, I do not bill any travel expenses if within 60km each way from my location in the North end of London Ontario – as measured by Googlemaps. Stratford, Woodstock, Ingersol, Tillsonburg, Port Stanley, Grand Bend, Aylmer, Strathroy, and St. Thomas are all within this range. Any further from London, and then gas/food/accommodation expenses need to be factored in as appropriate.

Portraits

I always schedule time to meet up with you in the days or weeks prior to the portrait session. It is true that this can be arranged via phone or email sight unseen, but the personal touch is something that I strive for. While many professional models can go into a photoshoot 'cold', I find that getting together before any photos are taken builds up a good rapport between photographer and subject. We can narrow down the specifics of what you want, select a location, discuss clothing options, and possibly hair and makeup. It allows us to break the ice and to be comfortable later while the photos are being taken, and this exacting care and individual attention will directly translate into the finished product for you.

An actual portrait session will usually not be longer than an hour from start to finish, and is based upon one individual or couple being photographed at one location with no limit on actual photos taken (additional persons will increase portrait session time by at least half an hour).

The standard post production for Portraits includes a selection of low resolution proof shots from which you can choose up to five to be touched up - that would be suitable for printing. This number is negotiable and depending on your needs.

Tips: find a favourite clean shirt or blouse with no complex patterns, nicely pressed and wrinkle free, a favourite sweater or jewelry, clean shoes or boots. Sometimes a second shirt or skirt as a backup option is handy. Have the ability to touch up makeup or hair on site. And treat yourself to a visit to a hair stylist or barber shortly before the shoot!

Fashion/Modelling

For those who are interested in starting, building, or updating a modelling or fashion portfolio, or designers interested in shots of their clothing lines, I also offer at least one pre shoot consultation, which will be more in depth than that of the portrait one and could take well over an hour or more. Emphasis on meetings will be in the selection of clothing/garments, the overall desired feel of the images, location selection, overall number and usage of finished shots, the number of models to be photographed, and possibly the number of sessions (discounts for multiple sessions booked at the same time are always possible).

The fashion session will certainly not be less than an hour from start to finish, and is often longer depending on the number of models, garments, looks or locations being photographed. If professional hair and makeup are needed, this would be additional time and cost on the day of the shoot.

The standard post production for Fashion and Modeling includes a selection of low resolution proof shots from which you can choose up to five to be touched up - that would be suitable for printing. This number is negotiable and depending on your needs.

Tips: For models, make sure you bring a couple of different pairs of shoes, possibly different coloured underwear if shooting in different garments. Ensure jewelry can be removed if needed. If having hair and makeup done on site, don't do your own before hand. For designers, ensure that you have met with the models, and the garments fit or alterations/repairs can be made prior to or during the shoot.

Fine Art Nudes

[© Mike Wood Photography]

Appreciating the female or male artistic nude is something that appeals to many. Comparatively, having a tasteful artistic nude photo taken of yourself (or you and your partner) is something that very few undertake. And with the prevalence of body art these days that is often partially covered or totally hidden, this is a shame. Nudes are not for the timid, but the results are something you can cherish and will want to display in your home. Everyone has body image hang-ups which come from seeing ourselves in unflattering angles, or lighting in the gym locker room, or in the cramped changing room trying on a bathing suit. What I will do is capture images from different and better angles, and use poses, positions, and lighting that will accentuate and flatter the natural female curves, the masculine physique, or your new piercing or ink in the way that sculptures and painters have done for centuries.

This is perhaps the most important type of photography to meet with up face to face prior to shooting. I want you to be involved in the whole creative experience and be comfortable with the idea of shooting nudes with me. This includes discussing what sort of images are desired: If you have seen a look or a style that appeals to you in my gallery, online or in a book, bring an image or two with you when we meet initially, or send me a link. I strive to make each nude shoot a relaxed and professional one for all those involved - and we will review the shots as we go along so you are aware of how I am portraying you.

A nude session can last 60-90 mins from start to finish, with no limit on actual photos taken, and can be done on location at your residence for your privacy – though outdoor nudes can (and have been done) if requested and locations can be obtained. Oh, and feel free to bring along a chaperone if needed.

The standard post production for Fine Art Nudes includes a selection of low resolution proof shots from which you can choose up to five images to be touched up - that would be suitable for printing.

Tips: don’t wear tight underwear or tight jeans/pants to the shoot as they will leave marks on the skin which will take time to fade. Loose clothing is best. A robe or cover-up to wear while I am adjusting lighting between different angles is a good idea too. With most artistic nudes being black and white, a tan is not important, but tan lines can be a challenge. Please bring along any props, jewelry or accessories desired for the shoot. Have the ability to touch up makeup or hair on site. Visit a hair stylist before the shoot, and treat yourself to a manicure/pedicure too!
